The Third Death

Last night I walked down to the waters edge,
My toes gripped to the ledge,
And though it’s dark I saw right to the ground.
I saw the moon,
I saw the dark within,
I heard the rushes sing,
And whispered to them softly so they’d hear.
When I go,
That’s the first,
And the second’s,
When I’m in my grave,
And the third’s,
When the wolrd no longer,
Speaks my name.
I heard them sigh,
«Alas you’re not the first,
To ramble through this dirt,
And stare into these waters so afraid,
Many have tried,
To figure out this life,
The what’s the where’s and whys,
And really though it’s always been the same;
When you go,
That’s the first,
And the second’s,
When you’re in my grave,
And the third’s,
When the wolrd no longer,
Speaks your name."
I saw their eyes,
I heard their voices too,
Their faces stuck like glue,
And stayed embeded ever in my mind.
Within I could see,
A thousand just like me,
All singing out with,
«Together we will always be the same».
«And when we go,
That’s the first,
And the second’s,
When we’re in my grave,
And the third’s,
When the wolrd no longer,
Speaks our name.»
