How to Love Someone

I didn’t know how to love someone
Although I thought I did
When all I had was a teenage fire
Then the easy lover separation
Where you don’t have to do a thing
Except live a kind of dull desire
Oh, some people can just do it
Head down and motor through it
And pick themselves up on the other side
For others it’s just hard
To even start
No matter how they try
I still don’t know how to love someone
Though I’ve been there once or twice
The parts that were not working need a change
And I feel just like the captain
Of a ship made out of ice
Melting in the forest of the strange
Oh, some people can just do it
Head down and motor through it
And pick themselves up on the other side
For others it’s just hard
To even start
No matter how they try
But if you know how to love someone
I suggest you write a book
And shout it from the mountain tops on high
And the rest of us will listen hard
Try not to be mistook
Maybe catch some echoes as they fly
Oh, some people can just do it
