5th of July

The streets are full of red white and blue firecracker papers
We’ll clean it all up later
We all crawl back to work on a Tuesday but it feels just like a Monday
We’re slaves to that money
Thought we drank to Independence Day last night
But in the dawn’s early light, nothin' much has changed
The courthouse flag’s still wavin' in the rain
The echoes of «Born in the USA»
Haunt the empty shops on main
And yesterday’s parade has passed us by
On this fifth of July
There’s still a cloud of black smoke in the sky from our celebration
The birth of a nation
There’s tired and there’s poor
There’s huddled masses yearning to breathe free
Choking on the dream
