Life In Trees

Wake up your things
And steal away after dark.
If only we’d sleep
Long enough to dream.
We’ll settle in trees,
Carve our names in the bark
Till our young are moved
In the purple dark.
Tell us a tale
Of ships with holes in their seams;
How they sink down
Into frozen dreams.
Tell me the one
Of dark spots in the sun;
Keep our cold skin
From living on the run.
But those words that you spoke
Twist till they lose their appeal.
And that catch in your throat,
It gives you away,
It’s not real.
Tired of trees;
Drop them all down.
Build a new life
On the barren ground.
Two story house
With blankets on the walls
To keep our young love
From having ugly falls.
