The Limerick Races

I’m a simple Irish lad who’s off to have some comfort
To satisfy my mind, to Limerick town I came, sir
Oh, what a lovely place and what a charming city
Where the boys are all so free and the girls are all so pretty

It was on the first of May, I first began me rambles
When everything was there, both jaunting car and gambols
I looked upon the road, 'twas lined with smiling faces
Happy as can be as they’re going to see the races

Oh, then I had to walk and made me way to th’race, so
And did I reach the coast where everything was gay, so
Aside the wooden house and in the upper storey
A man struck up a tune one day called «Garryowen for glory»

There were fiddlers playing them jigs and lads and lassies dancing
And chaps upon their nags around the course were prancing
A drink of whiskey punch, while others bawled out gayly:
«Hurray for Ireland’s green and the shamrock and shillelagh»

There were betters to and fro, to go to see the race so
And one of the sporting chaps of course came to me sir
«I bet you fifty pound, I’ll put her down this minute
I’ll bet you ten-to-one says I, the foremost horse will win it»
