Black Pines

We saw 40 geese fly over frozen water
Like an artifact
We saw three deer
And saw six eyes stare back
Six lights in the black

Lazy leaves in creeks were spotted
Fallen from the sky above
Autumn’s rust like sheets upon you
Fallen from wheels of god’s love
I thought we were tin men then
But now I know we played at when
Stayed up late and talked to wind

We’d still watch the sky for water
Watching a hawk pretend to be a friend
