Where is the mystery?
Where is my subject?
Where is my cold black river?
And how do I get there?
I know I sing to forget
I sign to hold my breath
To feel the thumping in my chest
But sometimes there is nothing to speak of
The breath is revealing
Is it hot? No the flame is damp
There is no sound
No other’s hand
And I’m not that kind of man
No I just want to dance
And looking back over my life
Lord, I’ve seen that fire die
But only to become kindling
Tape deck kids on the street
Are singing songs while waiting in the car
There was no reason for me not to love you
And I do, but not the way you wanted me to
I’ve been making up all of these things to do
And I’m always on the move
So I’ve been trying to get back to that mystery plane
There is always another way
And this river is never-ending
And there is just nobody to drink it away
