there was a snake in the road
and it was talking to me
had no mouth left to move
been dead at least a week
but i knew the voice right away
convinced my feet to stay
and as the moon rise high
i knelt by his broken side
and he said
i got you beat on borrowed time

and now the earth shook below
and the snake showed his teeth
i felt knives in my blood
and i smelled something sweet
i watched the sky crack and peel
exposing bars of steel
and i looked the snake in the eye
