When I was a young man, I really didn’t understand.
The words that you told me, now the truth I see.
It’s not the money you make or money for money’s sake.
Many things will come and go, you’ll miss people the most.
So long, sad to see you go. I’m still learnin' just what you knew.
What you said years ago; your wisdom hits like déjà vu.
Work was your plan, no party for the man.
You don’t have to like it you see, that’s the way it’s gotta be.
It’s your family for heaven’s sake, a love you can’t replace.
Money will come and go, it’s not your friend or brother, no.
You said be a better man. Now I understand
How it had to be. ‘cuz of what you didn’t have I see.
You could not afford to lose, no time to sing the blues.
And now that I walk in your shoes, it’s your words that I use.
