Sweet Delirium

Followed a dark tunnel all the way to its end
Found a 40 watt bulb dangling
Swinging from the ceiling
Flickering like some miniature fireworks display
Knew the show wasn’t for me but watched anyway
And I heard
The heartbeats of everyone
Who’d been there before
The pounding of ancient drums
Coming up through the floor
Wondered if my imagination was acting up again
Maybe I’d fallen victim to sweet delirium
Probably heard one too many stories
Told by a swindler selling charisma all day long
We never heard from that thief again
They say he headed out west
