Heads in the Clouds

sat up
in bed and read
with my right arm held by your breath
and then you woke up
and asked how long i’d been up
and why didn’t i wake you
i said 'i thought about it
but you looked like the moon
or maybe a death star'
on your back, i trace the freckles
say 'they're stars in the midnight sky'
you rolled over, mumbled 'cuddle me'
'you don’t have to ask me twice'
and so we laid there, got high and laid there

stand up, yank on your shoulder
and you turn around, let the cold water
run down
your neck — hasn’t gotten warm yet.
so we drive north, straight through the canyon
and we took turns deciding
which road we should take,
got lost so we put the seats down.
