Understanding the Fade

I wanted to keep your eyes open.
I wasn’t there to hold you down.
I wanted just to keep your eyes open.
So you could see the waters of which you drown.
It’s not supposed to be like that for anyone.
I won’t tell you to understand; I did what I could, then we were faded.
I hope you can understand that I never meant for us to be.
Times have changed so much since then,
But I know that we’re still the same.
Same pain, same fear, same skin with a new year.
I hope you got out, and you ran far.
I know you wouldn’t look back except to remember…
The good times were gone, it was time to move on…
We’ve traded in June for December.
I won’t tell you to understand; I did what I could, then we were faded.
They didn’t understand; they did what they would, then we were faded.
We need to understand that we did what we could, then we were faded.
I hope you can understand that I never meant for us to be.
I didn’t mean to let go.
But I was frightened by the undertow.
