Little Blimps

And from the abattoir
I saw the same things you saw
A fleet of little blimps
A flock of bright and burning battleships
Erupt across the town
And then they tore the sky down
While we burrow for words
Collecting snail shells inside our skirts
But still we weren’t sure
If we’d existed at all
If no one else survives
We’ll keep their families in our minds
We’ll dance this night into
Some awkward morning
We’ll dance this night in two
Just you and me
The streets still held a glow
Too wonderful to be so
A fire where no fire should
A new volcano where your family stood
But still we never knew
If you were me or I you
Our hands cover our eyes
Before these flames become flies
