Soldier's Prayer

Darling, I received your letter
I read it over a dozen times or more
I pray I’m standing when this war is over
So I can kiss your sweet lips once more
They say that we’ll be here awhile now
We’ve been fighting for years now it seems
If I was sent home to you tomorrow
I’d still be fighting forever in my dreams
Last night when the bombs started falling
A soldier’s cries sent a shiver through my soul
He was crying out for his mother
He looked no more than 15 years old
Miss. Avery I regret to inform you
That your darling stands tall no more
He fought and died like a proud brave soldier
But there’s something that you should know
Miss. Avery he received your last letter
And through it all he just wouldn’t let it go
As they carried him away I heard him praying
