Where are the people? There’s nobody here.
The village is empty, they say.
They’ve gathered to listen to Baptizin' John
On the banks of the Jordan today
Baptizin' John with camel’s hair on
He’s calling repentance from sin
Paving the way on that glorious day
The Master’s way to come in
On the banks of the Jordan lost sinners await
Baptism with water by John
Hoping and trusting it isn’t too late
That their life with the Lord can go on
Lost souls are praying as Herod’s men ask,
«This mad man, who is he and why?»
«I baptism with water,» says Baptizin' John,
«For there comes someone greater than I.»
John hesitated and then looked around
As Jesus came walking to him
John thought for a moment and started to balk
Jesus said, «John, baptize me, my friend.»
The Spirit descended in the form of a dove
And landed upon Jesus' head
«This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased,»
The voice of the Father said.
