The Other Shoe

I never thought about the future
Never even crossed my mind
Went to work every day to earn my dollar
Always had my nose to the grind
So I missed all the signals
I should have spent more time at home
Now every other week my boy comes to visit
When he leaves I feel so all alone
It’s a short drop to the bottom
And a long climb to the top
Some nights I feel the silence
Of my whole world coming to a stop
How did this ever happen
It doesn’t make any sense at all
I spend my time anticipating
Waiting for the other shoe to fall
Went to see my boy play soccer
Then I saw her across the field
I felt my heart beat right through my chest
Is this a dream or is it real
I didn’t want to believe it
When I saw her in the stands
It’s been a long time since I’ve seen that smile
She had her arms around another man
